Community Guidelines
Last updated: September 23, 2026
This & That is built for people to discover, rank, review, and talk about the things they watch, read, and listen to — and to connect with other people who share their tastes.
Good communities depend on honest opinions, genuine participation, disagreement without abuse, and respect for other people.
These Community Guidelines explain what is and is not allowed on This & That. They apply to profiles, usernames, profile photos, reviews, comments, ratings, rankings, collections, lists, direct messages, reports, and other content or activity on the Service.
These Guidelines form part of our Terms of Service. The Service is intended for users who meet the eligibility requirements in our Terms, including the minimum age requirement of 14 years old.
What This & That Is For
This & That is a place to:
- Rate and review movies, television, books, podcasts, music, and other media;
- Create rankings, lists, collections, and favorites;
- Discover new media;
- Compare tastes with other users;
- Find people with similar interests;
- Discuss and debate media, culture, creators, and ideas;
- Share genuine opinions, including strong or unpopular ones; and
- Build a community around discovery and taste.
You do not have to agree with other users. You do have to follow these rules when interacting with them.
Be Genuine
Participate honestly and do not deliberately mislead other users about who you are or what you are doing on the Service.
You should:
- Give ratings and reviews that reflect your actual opinions;
- Clearly distinguish personal opinion from factual claims when appropriate;
- Use rankings, lists, and collections authentically;
- Respect other people's right to disagree with you;
- Avoid deliberately misleading other users; and
- Report behavior that violates these Guidelines rather than escalating the situation yourself.
Parody, commentary, and fan accounts may be permitted when their nature is reasonably clear and they are not used to impersonate or deceive others.
Differences in taste are part of the point of This & That. Disagree with the opinion, not the person.
What Is Not Allowed
1. Harassment, Bullying, and Targeted Abuse
Do not use This & That to harass, bully, intimidate, stalk, or repeatedly target another person.
This includes:
- Repeated unwanted contact;
- Abusive or degrading personal attacks;
- Coordinated harassment;
- Encouraging others to target a person;
- Threatening to expose someone unless they comply with a demand;
- Sexual harassment;
- Deliberately following or contacting a blocked user through additional accounts;
- Using reviews, comments, profiles, or messages primarily to attack another user; or
- Continuing unwanted interaction after another user has clearly asked you to stop.
Criticizing someone's opinion, review, ranking, public work, or ideas is not automatically harassment. Persistent personal targeting can be.
2. Hate and Hateful Conduct
Do not attack, dehumanize, threaten, or promote hatred against people based on protected characteristics such as:
- Race;
- Ethnicity;
- National origin;
- Religion;
- Sex;
- Gender;
- Gender identity;
- Sexual orientation;
- Disability; or
- Other characteristics protected by applicable law.
Discussion, criticism, satire, historical analysis, political debate, or discussion of controversial ideas is not automatically prohibited merely because the subject matter is sensitive.
The line is crossed when content targets people with threats, dehumanization, advocacy of violence, or other prohibited hateful conduct.
3. Threats, Violence, and Dangerous Conduct
Do not:
- Make credible threats of violence;
- Encourage another person to commit violence;
- Celebrate or solicit imminent violence against an identifiable person;
- Coordinate violent activity;
- Provide threats intended to terrorize another user;
- Encourage dangerous conduct likely to cause serious physical harm; or
- Use the Service to facilitate violent criminal conduct.
We may remove content and take immediate action where we reasonably believe a statement or activity presents a serious safety risk.
Where appropriate or legally required, we may preserve relevant information or contact law enforcement, emergency authorities, or other appropriate organizations.
4. Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse
This & That has zero tolerance for child sexual exploitation or abuse.
You may not create, upload, request, send, distribute, link to, solicit, or promote:
- Child sexual abuse material;
- Sexualized imagery involving minors;
- Grooming or sexual solicitation of minors;
- Sexual exploitation of minors;
- Instructions for obtaining or distributing such material; or
- Other content that unlawfully sexualizes or exploits children.
Accounts involved in this conduct may be permanently terminated immediately.
We may preserve and report relevant information to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) or other appropriate authorities where required by applicable law.
Do not repost suspected child sexual abuse material in order to report it. Use the reporting tools or contact us instead.
5. Sexually Explicit and Exploitative Content
This & That is not intended to be a pornography platform.
Do not post:
- Pornographic imagery;
- Explicit depictions of sexual activity;
- Explicit nudity posted primarily for sexual gratification;
- Sexual-services advertisements;
- Non-consensual intimate imagery; or
- Sexually exploitative content.
Discussion of sexuality, sexual themes in media, sexual health, art, history, or similar subjects may be permitted when the content itself does not violate these Guidelines.
6. Self-Harm and Suicide
Do not encourage, glorify, pressure, or instruct another person to harm themselves or attempt suicide.
This includes content that:
- Encourages another user to injure themselves;
- Encourages suicide;
- Bullies someone toward self-harm;
- Provides instructions intended to facilitate self-harm; or
- Targets a vulnerable person with encouragement to hurt themselves.
Good-faith discussion of mental health, recovery, personal experiences, journalism, art, or media involving self-harm is not automatically prohibited.
If we reasonably believe there is a credible and immediate risk to someone's safety, we may take steps permitted by law to respond.
7. Privacy, Doxxing, and Personal Information
Do not expose or threaten to expose another person's private or sensitive information without authorization.
This may include:
- Home addresses;
- Private phone numbers;
- Personal email addresses;
- Government identification numbers;
- Financial account information;
- Passwords or login credentials;
- Private medical information;
- Precise private location information; or
- Other information that creates a meaningful risk of harassment, fraud, identity theft, or physical harm.
Publicly available information is not automatically permitted if it is being shared primarily to facilitate harassment, intimidation, fraud, or harm.
8. Impersonation and Deceptive Identity
Do not impersonate another person or organization in a deceptive manner.
You may not create or use an account intended to falsely convince others that you are:
- Another user;
- A public figure;
- A company or organization;
- This & That staff; or
- Another person whose identity you do not have permission to represent.
Parody, commentary, and fan accounts may be permitted where their nature is reasonably clear and they do not mislead users about their identity or affiliation.
9. Spam, Scams, Fraud, and Manipulation
Do not use This & That to deceive users, exploit users, or manipulate the platform.
Prohibited behavior includes:
- Phishing;
- Financial scams;
- Fraudulent giveaways;
- Malicious or deceptive links;
- Repetitive unsolicited promotions;
- Automated spam;
- Fake accounts used for manipulation;
- Buying or selling fake engagement;
- Coordinated manipulation of ratings or rankings;
- Artificially inflating follows, reviews, likes, or other engagement;
- Operating bots or automated accounts without authorization; or
- Misrepresenting something for the purpose of stealing money, information, or account access.
10. Illegal Activity
Do not use This & That to facilitate unlawful activity.
This includes using the Service to:
- Facilitate trafficking or exploitation;
- Distribute illegal materials;
- Coordinate serious criminal conduct;
- Sell unlawfully obtained goods;
- Facilitate unauthorized access to computer systems; or
- Engage in other conduct prohibited by applicable law.
Discussion, reporting, journalism, fictional depictions, documentaries, historical content, or academic discussion about illegal activity is not automatically prohibited. Context matters.
11. Intellectual Property
Respect other people's copyrights, trademarks, and other intellectual-property rights.
Do not upload material that you do not have the right to use.
Good-faith reviews, commentary, criticism, discussion, and other uses may be permitted under applicable law, but users are responsible for ensuring they have appropriate rights to material they submit.
Copyright complaints may be submitted using the process described in our Terms of Service.
12. Malicious Technical Activity
Do not attempt to damage, disrupt, exploit, or improperly access This & That's systems, accounts, or data.
This includes:
- Malware or viruses;
- Credential theft;
- Attempts to compromise another account;
- Unauthorized API access;
- Security bypasses;
- Exploitation of software vulnerabilities;
- Interference with moderation, reporting, or blocking tools;
- Attempts to overwhelm our infrastructure; or
- Other malicious technical behavior.
If you discover a potential security vulnerability, please report it to us rather than exploiting it.
Reviews, Ratings, Rankings, and Collections
Reviews should primarily be used to discuss the media being reviewed. Ratings, rankings, and collections should reflect genuine user activity.
Strong opinions are welcome. Users may dislike a movie, book, podcast, song, television series, creator, or other media and may say so.
However, these features must still comply with these Guidelines. You may not use reviews, ratings, rankings, collections, or similar features primarily to:
- Harass another user;
- Publish private information;
- Spam the platform;
- Promote scams;
- Manipulate rankings or engagement;
- Make threats; or
- Post otherwise prohibited content.
We may remove ratings, reviews, rankings, or other activity associated with coordinated, fraudulent, automated, or otherwise inauthentic manipulation.
Automated Moderation
This & That may use automated systems and third-party service providers to help identify User Content that potentially violates these Guidelines.
Automated moderation may be applied when content is submitted, after publication, or in connection with a report. It may include analysis of submitted text or images.
If an automated system prevents content from being posted, the Service may inform you that the content could not be published.
Automated systems are not perfect. Content may also be reviewed by authorized This & That personnel, particularly after a report is submitted.
The use of automated moderation does not guarantee that every violation will be identified or removed.
Reporting Content or Users
If you encounter content or behavior that violates these Guidelines, please report it.
Where available, you can use the Report option on:
- User profiles;
- Reviews;
- Comments;
- Direct messages; and
- Other supported content.
You can also contact us at:
When submitting a report, provide enough information for us to understand what happened.
Do not submit knowingly false reports or repeatedly misuse the reporting system to target another user.
Reported Direct Messages
Direct messages are not public, and This & That personnel do not routinely read users' private conversations for unrelated purposes.
If a direct message, conversation, or user is reported through the Service, authorized This & That personnel may review the reported message and, where reasonably necessary to investigate the report, relevant surrounding conversation context.
We may use this information to determine whether our Terms of Service or Community Guidelines have been violated and whether enforcement action is appropriate.
We may also preserve or disclose messages or related records where required by law or reasonably necessary to address serious safety, security, fraud, abuse, exploitation, or child-safety concerns.
Blocking Users
This & That provides blocking tools so users can limit unwanted interaction.
When a block is in effect, the Service is intended to prevent the blocked users from viewing one another's profiles or initiating new interactions through blocked features, including new direct messages or comments.
Content or communications created before the block, including prior comments or messages, may remain visible where the Service's functionality permits.
Blocking someone does not automatically submit a report. If someone has violated these Guidelines, you may use both the Block and Report tools.
Attempting to evade another user's block through additional or replacement accounts may itself violate these Guidelines.
How We Review Reports
Reports may be assessed using automated systems, human moderators, or both.
When evaluating a report, we may consider:
- The content itself;
- The surrounding context;
- Prior conduct;
- The severity of the alleged violation;
- Whether another person appears to be at risk;
- Whether the behavior is repeated;
- Whether the conduct appears intentional;
- Applicable law; and
- Other relevant information.
Not every disagreement or unpleasant interaction violates these Guidelines.
We may determine that reported content does not warrant removal even if another user finds it offensive, inaccurate, unpopular, or objectionable.
Response Priorities
We prioritize reports based on risk and severity.
Reports involving child safety, credible threats, serious exploitation, immediate physical danger, or other high-risk safety concerns receive priority review.
Other reports are reviewed based on severity, context, available information, and moderation capacity. Review times may vary depending on the complexity of the matter, report volume, technical issues, or whether additional investigation is needed.
If there is an immediate danger to someone's life or physical safety, contact appropriate emergency services or law enforcement. Do not rely solely on an in-app report.
Enforcement
We consider the nature, severity, context, and history of a violation when deciding what action to take.
Possible actions include:
- Preventing content from being published;
- Removing content;
- Removing a review, comment, image, ranking, collection, or profile element;
- Issuing a warning;
- Limiting particular features;
- Restricting messaging;
- Restricting posting or commenting;
- Temporarily suspending an account;
- Permanently terminating an account;
- Preventing creation of replacement accounts;
- Preserving relevant records;
- Reporting conduct to appropriate authorities where required or appropriate; or
- Taking other reasonable safety or enforcement measures.
Not every violation receives a warning before enforcement.
Serious conduct — including child exploitation, credible threats, severe harassment, fraud, or attempts to compromise the Service — may result in immediate account termination without prior warning.
Repeated violations may result in stronger enforcement even if an individual violation would otherwise result in a lesser action.
Moderation decisions may involve judgment, and we do not guarantee that every violation will be identified or that every decision will be error-free.
Attempts to Evade Enforcement
Do not attempt to evade a restriction, suspension, termination, block, or other safety measure.
This includes:
- Creating replacement accounts after suspension or termination;
- Using another person's account to circumvent a restriction;
- Altering prohibited content solely to evade moderation;
- Coordinating with others to continue prohibited conduct; or
- Circumventing blocking, reporting, moderation, or other safety tools.
Accounts created primarily to evade enforcement may also be removed.
Appeals
If you believe we made a moderation mistake, you may request review by contacting:
Please include:
- Your This & That username;
- The content or account involved;
- The approximate date of the enforcement action; and
- A brief explanation of why you believe the decision should be reconsidered.
Submitting an appeal does not guarantee that an enforcement action will be reversed.
We may decline repeated, duplicative, fraudulent, threatening, or abusive appeals relating to the same decision.
Our Approach to Moderation
This & That is built around opinions.
We do not expect users to agree about movies, books, music, podcasts, culture, creators, or ideas. We also do not want moderation to become a tool for silencing ordinary disagreement.
Content is not automatically prohibited merely because it is:
- Unpopular;
- Critical;
- Controversial;
- Satirical;
- Offensive to some people; or
- Contrary to another user's beliefs.
At the same time, context and conduct matter.
Threats, targeted harassment, exploitation, fraud, doxxing, child sexual abuse material, and the other behavior prohibited in these Guidelines are not protected merely because they are framed as an opinion, joke, review, satire, or debate.
Changes to These Guidelines
We may update these Community Guidelines as This & That develops, new features are introduced, our safety systems change, or applicable law requires.
When we make changes, we will update the Last updated date at the top of this page.
Material changes may also be communicated through the Service, by email, or through another reasonable method where appropriate.
